Edinburgh - In the Doghouse !

A while ago -after a short flight from Gatwick, saw us land in Edinburgh for a couple of nights stay in the Brewdog hotel (the Doghouse). One of their three themed hotels in the UK.

Travelling light, the airport to City centre is an easy and cheap trip on the Tram, 13 or14 stops takes you right into the centre or any other stops along the way https://edinburghtrams.com/plan-journey/route-maps-stops

The weather is fine (April) so a quick 10 minute walk from St Andrews Square tram stop, through Waverley station and slightly to the lower end of royal mile and High Street sees us arrive at the hotel.

We are welcomed swiftly by the staff, who check us in and offer us our first (of many) Beers - Rude not to ? So a pint of Hazy Jane for me, a Lost Lager for the good lady .

The hotel (and bars) are full of quirky Brewdog bits everywhere you turn, it's like a sensory journey.

Having booked the top dog package which includes:

  • Fully loaded shower beer fridge

  • Five litres of Punk IPA, Hazy Jane or Dead Pony Club on tap in your room!

  • Breakfast for two people

  • Dinner for two with a flight of beers in main bar

  • 60 minute Beer School experience at 6pm

  • 10% off our BrewDog Edinburgh bars during your stay

We are in Toney Hopoloney room on the first floor (all the rooms are named after their Beers)

Full of the quirks - record player, amplifier, guitar, neon signs, branded slippers, dressing gowns books, and of course Beer - even in the Shower !!

After settling in, we go for a wander just around the corner and up the royal mile, resisting the temptation to stop for a beer or food at this stage.  Edinburgh is a lovely city to wander around taking in the Scottish atmosphere, and having been before, we didn't feel compelled to do any of the touristy type things, but if you've never done the Castle I recommend it,
along with the other usual offerings depending on your preferences.

Back to the Hotel for a quick power nap, (after a beer from shower and tap in the room) then its just around the corner for lovely traditional Scottish meal - yes you guessed it Haggis - not everyone's taste, but I love it. We hadn't booked, but the restaurant looked as though they had a few spare tables so we took our chance, not wanting to walk any further into the touristy parts of the City with the inevitable chain restaurants.

I can't for the life of me remember what the restaurant was called but the food was excellent.

Feeling very full, and after a long day, it's time to retire to the super comfy bed, unable to have another beer for fear of exploding, and the fact that the bedroom is upstairs and multiple trips down the stairs to empty my bladder in the night didn't appeal. (for the younger readers you have this delight to come in later years)

Only having one breakfast in the package we were saving this for our last morning, so today we head out for yet another epic wander , but stopping for a Haggis breakfast.

Midday saw us a bit peckish - where to go ? We had passed a little tapas place called Piggs that looked nice, so we gave it a try. Piggs .

I'm so glad we did, we go for 3 or 4 taps plates ( ranging from £5-£8 )the staff so friendly and the food lovely with great portion sizes, If you like Tapas go here, and just sit and watch the world go by.

Time to head back to the Hotel, taking advantage of the free Beer tokens that you get if you reuse your towels - a great incentive !

After a shower (resisting the urge for another beer in the shower !) It's down to the main bar for the beer school, where a nice young lady talks us (with flight of drinks) through some of their beers - We had been joined by another couple by this stage who had not got out the hotel since their arrival !!

So after the beer school we joined our new compatriots for an evening meal, accompanied by yet another flight of beers, by this time the alcohol is well and truly catching up with all of us.

Morning comes around and it's time for the breakfast ( included in package ) a great selection catering for every taste, very filling.

A few hours to kill before check out we just mooch in the room. Any beer that remains ( including the tap Beer) can be taken with you, they will even fill a growler up for you to take away, unfortunately as we are flying and only hand luggage we don't make use of this offer.

So, is it worth it ? Some might say No as it's quite pricey for a hotel stay, but it's more than that -its the whole experience - I say Yes, but I am a bit of a Brewdog freak !

Thanks Edinburgh - we will return.
